Oregon State Bar Lawyer Referral and Modest Means Program

Oregon State Bar has launched a new online legal resource:
Low-income clients can submit questions via a secure web portal. Pro bono lawyers log on at their convenience, choose a question they are qualified to answer, and provide free answers, advice and resources. It currently focuses primarily on landlord/tenant matters. They are starting to recruit lawyers in many other areas to join the program (consumer, family, immigration, employment and housing law, for instance). DUII Speaker Volunteers

Have you been affected by a Drunk Driver? Been charged with a DUI and willing to share your experience?

The Umatilla County Victim Assistance Program is looking for members of the community who are interested in speaking at future Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) Victim Impact Panels. The Umatilla County Victim Impact Panel is a court-ordered condition of treatment or probation for persons who are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicants as well as persons under the age of 21 who have been charged with possessing alcohol and other controlled substances. Panel members consist of a diverse group of speakers from various backgrounds and professions, including past defendants convicted of DUII, family members that have experienced the loss of a loved one as a result of a DUII as well as Police Officers, ER Nurses, and other first responders of DUII related crashes.

The objective of the Victim Impact Panel is to help the participants understand the long-term consequences and trauma that can take place as a result of their impaired driving. The panel members share stories about how the crime of driving under the influence has negatively impacted their lives as well as those around them. The goal of the panel is not to blame or judge the participants but rather to encourage them to change patterns in their thinking and behavior and hopefully prevent future offenses.

The panel typically occurs three times a year and consists of two or three panel members speaking for 30-45 minutes. If you or anyone that you know might be interested in speaking or would like more information, contact the Victim Assistance Program by calling 541-278-6265 or emailing victim@umatillacounty.gov
