Umatilla County Search and Rescue is a volunteer organization
dedicated to saving lives through rescue and outdoor
safety
education.
The organization is a non-profit group of 20 to 30 volunteers who
donate the use of their private equipment. The unit answers 12 to 20
calls per year including missing or overdue persons, lost hunters,
stranded persons, medical emergencies and body recovery. The group
relies on donations from county citizens for equipment purchases and
training costs.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit was formed in the Spring
of 1997 by Sheriff John Trumbo to represent the County at local parades
and civic functions. The Mounted Unit is an all Volunteer group who
donate their time, money, horses, mules and equipment
to
maintain the
unit and pay travel costs to attend parades in nearby communities. The
Mounted Unit dresses in 1880’s frock coats, vests and shirts to depict
a Sheriff and his group of Deputies of that era. Members attempt to
have their tack and clothing resemble the 1880’s era as closely as
possible. No county funds are used to support the unit. Membership dues
and donations assist the unit with equipment, training costs and travel
accommodations.
The Sheriff’s Reserves is a model volunteer program. The Reserves provide additional staffing to supplement both the patrol and corrections divisions of the department. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has 16 Reserves, 7 of whom are Solo Qualified due to the completion of extensive training necessary to perform a law enforcement function on their own. The members of the Reserves are non-paid volunteers who donate a minimum of 16 hours per month for patrol, security and other duties. Reserves are responsible for supplying their own firearm, duty belt and other miscellaneous items. A Reserve fund pays for uniforms, equipment, ammunition, supplies and some vehicles used by the Reserves.
