Alfred Marshall was appointed as the first Sheriff of Umatilla County shortly after the county was established on Sept. 27, 1862. John Trumbo is the current Sheriff and has been since 1997.

Search and Rescue

Umatilla County Search and Rescue is a volunteer organization dedicated to saving lives through rescue and outdoorMeth Bust safety education. The organization is a non-profit group of 20 to 30 volunteers who donate the use of their private equipment. The unit answers 12 to 20 calls per year including missing or overdue persons, lost hunters, stranded persons, medical emergencies and body recovery. The group relies on donations from county citizens for equipment purchases and training costs.

Mounted Unit

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit was formed in the Spring of 1997 by Sheriff John Trumbo to represent the County at local parades and civic functions. The Mounted Unit is an all Volunteer group who donate their time, money, horses, mules and equipmentMeth Bust to maintain the unit and pay travel costs to attend parades in nearby communities. The Mounted Unit dresses in 1880’s frock coats, vests and shirts to depict a Sheriff and his group of Deputies of that era. Members attempt to have their tack and clothing resemble the 1880’s era as closely as possible. No county funds are used to support the unit. Membership dues and donations assist the unit with equipment, training costs and travel accommodations.

Reserves

The Sheriff’s Reserves is a model volunteer program. The Reserves provide additional staffing to supplement both the patrol and corrections divisions of the department.The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has 16 Reserves, 7 of whom are Solo Qualified due to the completion of extensive training necessary to perform a law enforcement function on their own. The members of the Reserves are non-paid volunteers who donate a minimum of 16 hours per month for patrol, security and other duties. Reserves are responsible for supplying their own firearm, duty belt and other miscellaneous items. A Reserve fund pays for uniforms, equipment, ammunition, supplies and some vehicles used by the Reserves.
