On
Thursday, July 12, 2010, Umatilla County Sheriff's Office welcomed
K9 Deputy "Stevie" to the Criminal Division after successfully
completing
Oregon Police Canine Associations (OPCA) Narcotics Canine Detection
Standards Testing with Deputy Lindsey Evans.
Ontario Police Department donated Stevie, 6 year old female,
German Shepherd Border Collie mix, after dissolving their K9 Unit
Program.
Stevie and Deputy Evans are certified for drug searches through
OPCA and will be available to outside agencies in addition to Umatilla
County Sheriff's Office.
Veterinarian James Burgess at Country Hospital is donating all
health care maintenance expenses, making the K9 Unit possible.
Without Deputy Evans' commitment to creating the K9 Program, absorbing
daily cost associated with Stevie and kind donation by Veterinarian
Burgess, this program would not exist.
K9 Deputy Stevie will assist and support public safety agencies to
effectively and efficiently carry out their mission. Oregon

The Sheriff's Reserves is a model volunteer program. The Reserves provide additional staffing to supplement both the patrol and corrections divisions of the department. The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office has 16 Reserves, 7 of whom are Solo Qualified due to the completion of extensive training necessary to perform a law enforcement function on their own. The members of the Reserves are non paid volunteers who donate a minimum of 16 hours per month for patrol, security and other duties. Reserves are responsible for supplying their own firearm, duty belt and other miscellaneous items. A Reserve fund pays for uniforms, equipment, ammunition, supplies and some vehicles used by the Reserves.

Our mission is to provide an
organized volunteer Search & Rescue Team devoted to helping the
lost, missing and overdue hunters, stranded motorist, medical
emergencies and body recovery searches. S.A.R. team members
assist Umatilla County Sheriff's Office deputies at major crime scenes
and are responsible for search and rescue operations and assist
neighboring county S.A.R. groups when needed.
To become certified, the applicant must successfully complete
training in and maintain 30 hours per year of continuing education in a
field related to search and rescue which is approved by the Sheriff and
S.A.R. coordinator:
» Emergency survival skills and
equipment
» Radio Communication
» Land navigation, GPS operation
» Crime Scene Security
» Search organization and management: Search Techniques,
Man tracking, Searcher Safety, and Incident Command System
and Rescue
Technique
» Helicopter Safety
» Wilderness Medicine
» CPR/First Aid
Training includes monthly meetings, weekend outings during the year
and outside training. The outings provide practical experience
through the use of mock searches, tracking
exercises, map and
compass
exercises and ATV operation. Outside training is available
through statewide man tracking courses, managing search operations
schools, mountaineering and other specialized classes. S.A.R.
member provide outdoor survival awareness training at local schools and
summer camps.
Umatilla County S.A.R. members respond to 10-12 calls per year, and
may spend anywhere between 4-5 hours on a search or 2-3 days on a
search. S.A.R. commitment involves time and money to become
properly equipped and trained for the unique challenges they will
face. Members donate the use of their personal equipment
including ATV's, snowmobiles, 4x4 vehicles, and horses or mules.
Call outs frequently occur during harsh conditions and volunteers are
required to be prepared with the proper clothing and equipment for any
weather conditions encountered on a search.
Umatilla County S.A.R. provide the required basic training.
Umatilla
County S.A.R. is a non-profit organization group solely reliant on
donations from citizens and grant funding for equipment purchases and
training costs. Thanks to county-wide donations of money and
equipment, Umatilla County S.A.R. converted a school bus into a command
center for search operations along with two vehicles set up as hasty
team vehicles and two ATV's available for search and rescue.

The Umatilla County Sheriff's Posse is a group of dedicated volunteers
operating without governmental financial support. This group
participates in parades, charitable events, celebrations, and the
special olympics. When requested, we provide Search & Rescue
support and conduct Mounted Patrols. The Posse likewise provides
scholarships to deserving BMCC Criminal Justice students.
The Umatilla County Sheriff's Posse recently joined in the preparation for the 2010 celebration of Pendleton Round-Up's 100th birthday. When the Posse was formed in 1997, we wanted to honor the times when the first Sheriff of Umatilla County was sworn in on September 27, 1862. We do this by using the historical dress, mounts, and equestrian attire depicting the western era of the late 1800's to the early 1900's.
No county funds are used to support
the unit. Membership dues
and donations assist the unit with equipment, training costs and travel
accommodations.
