ENJOY THE OUTDOORS – SAFELY    “IT’S YOUR RESPONSILITY”

Who we are:
Umatilla County Search and Rescue is dedicated to helping lost, injured or stranded individuals

What we do:
The unit answers 12 to 20 calls per year including missing or overdue persons that haven’t returned to their camp-site, lost hunters, stranded persons, medical emergencies and body recovery.

How we exist:
Umatilla County SAR is a non-profit organization group of 12 volunteers who donate their time and the use of their privately owned equipment to saving lives through rescue and outdoor safety education. The group is solely reliant on donations from citizens for equipment purchases and training costs.

Too often people realize too late that the outdoor activity they are involved with can lead to injury or death!

TEN ESSENTIALS TO SURVIVAL

1. Flashlight and spare batteries
2. Extra food and water
3. Extra clothing (Rain, wind and water protection)
4. Pocket knife
5. Navigational Aids (Maps, compass, GPS, chart, radio or cell phone) and know how to use them.
6. Candle
7. First Aid Kit & know how to use it.
8. Large garbage bag – emergency shelter
9. Matches in a waterproof container or full lighter
10. Sun protections (Glasses, sunscreen, hat)

Many people who have an outdoor misadventure quickly point out that having and using the 10 essentials allowed them to survive!

PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES:

  • Adjust your plan when circumstance change:
    •  Are you prepared if the weather changes?
    • What will you do if you run out of daylight?
    •  What will you do if your partner or other members of your group become ill or injured?
  • Be prepared:
    •  Will you stay warm and dry no matter what happens? (Dress in layers)
    • Are your ten (10) essentials and other necessary equipment in good working order? Have you practiced using all your survival equipment?
    •  Have you checked the weather?
    • Have you told someone where you’re going?
    • Do you know what to do if you get lost?
