Umatilla County is situated in one of the largest wheat and green
pea producing areas in the nation. In addition, other agricultural
commodities raised in the County include potatoes, vegetables, cattle,
hay, truck crops, fruit, and other seed crops.
The elevation ranges from 200 feet at the City of Umatilla on the
Columbia River to nearly 5,000 feet in the Blue Mountains on the
eastern and southern edges of Umatilla County.

Umatilla County is the 13th largest of Oregon’s 36 counties,
containing 3,231 square miles and a total population of 73,878. There
are twelve cities in Umatilla County with Helix having the smallest
population of 190 to Pendleton as the largest with a population of
17,175. Pendleton is the County Seat. Umatilla County was created on
September 27, 1862. Umatilla is an Indian word meaning “water rippling
over sand”. Pendleton is also known because of the world famous
Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Pageant which occur every
September.
The southern portion of the County provides sources of wood fiber
and forest products. Pendleton Flour Mills produces flour from area
wheat fields and ships the finished product all over the world.
Continental Mills produces flour for Krusteaz for many of their
delicious products. Pendleton is also home for the world famous
Pendleton Woolen Mills which produces the all-woolen Pendleton blankets
and other products. Tourism is growing and becoming very important in
this crossroads County.
Umatilla
County is served by Union Pacific Railroad, Greyhound Bus, and
Horizon Air. Union Pacific Railroad has one of the largest train
assembly yards in the United States located at Hinkle.
The shopping areas of the County consist of Milton-Freewater,
Hermiston, and Pendleton. The Milton-Freewater area has fruit orchards
consisting of cherries, apples, peaches, and prunes. Hermiston is
famous for its large, juicy watermelons and potato farms that are
irrigated with large circle sprinkler systems.
Four distinct seasons make Umatilla County a year-round recreation
destination. Sports people find Umatilla County a place for hunting,
fishing, boating, and winter activities. Deer, elk, ducks, geese, as
well as pheasants and chukkers are to be found in Umatilla County. Lake
and stream fishing produce bass, catfish, trout, and steelhead.
